Refunds and chargebacks on stream tips in the UK

Worried that a viewer will take a tip back? No card payment removes that risk completely, but in the UK you have one option that does: Pay by Bank. This guide explains how refunds and card chargebacks work with DonoLink and Stripe, and how to keep the risk low.

Handle a disputed tip

  1. Read Stripe's notification and the tip details.
  2. Gather the context: message, date and any chat history.
  3. Respond within Stripe's deadline.
  4. Check the tip's status in your DonoLink dashboard.

Refund or chargeback: the difference

A refund is your decision, for example after a tip sent by mistake. A chargeback, or dispute, is opened by the cardholder with their bank. The bank reviews the case and can take the money back.

Pay by Bank cannot be charged back

With Pay by Bank the viewer approves the payment in their own banking app and the money moves straight from their account. These payments cannot be charged back like a card. Stripe charges 0.5% + 20p, capped at £5, and the option appears on your page once Stripe has activated it for your account.

Card tips stay disputable, so never treat a card payment as final the moment it arrives.

What happens with DonoLink

Because each tip is a direct charge on your connected account, a dispute lands on your Stripe account. Stripe notifies you and you can submit evidence under its rules; Stripe may charge a dispute fee under its terms. In DonoLink the tip moves to refunded or disputed status and drops out of your totals.

Lower the risk

Some habits that help:

The alert already played

An alert shown live cannot be undone, but a disputed tip no longer counts towards your goal or income. Treat a tip as final only once the dispute window has passed.
