Guide 2026
Are Twitch donations taxable in the UK?
Donations and tips from viewers are money you earn from streaming, so sooner or later the tax question comes up. This guide summarises how streaming income generally works in the UK, from the £1,000 trading allowance to Self Assessment and its deadlines, and links to the official HMRC guidance on GOV.UK. It is general information, not tax advice.
At a glance
- Streaming income, donations and tips included, can be taxable trading income.
- The £1,000 trading allowance covers small amounts of trading income.
- Above it, you generally register for Self Assessment by 5 October.
- Keep records of every tip, fee and payout.
Get ready for Self Assessment
- Export your tips and payouts from your dashboard.
- Add up your streaming income by source for the tax year.
- Check the trading allowance and Self Assessment rules on GOV.UK.
- Talk to an accountant if your situation is complex.
Are Twitch donations taxable income?
In most cases, yes. Money you receive because you stream is linked to the content you provide, and HMRC generally treats regular streaming income as trading income. Calling a payment a tip or a donation does not change that. Tips are not charitable donations, so Gift Aid never applies.
The £1,000 trading allowance
HMRC's trading allowance lets you earn up to £1,000 of gross trading income in a tax year without declaring it. Above that, you usually need to register for Self Assessment and report the income. If you use the allowance, you cannot also deduct your actual costs, so once your gear, software and other allowable costs pass £1,000, deducting them usually works out better. Check the current rules on GOV.UK every year.
Self Assessment dates to put in your calendar
The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. If you need to file for the first time, tell HMRC by 5 October after the end of that tax year. The online return, and any tax you owe, are due by 31 January. Miss the deadline and HMRC charges a late filing penalty, so file early once your year is complete.
Self Assessment and records
Once you are registered, you file a Self Assessment tax return each year. Keep track of:
- The gross amount and date of each tip.
- DonoLink fees (3.5%) and Stripe fees.
- Payouts that reached your bank account in pounds.
- Other streaming income: subs, Bits, sponsorships and ad revenue.
What DonoLink gives you
Your dashboard lists every tip with its amount, fees and net. The Transactions tab collects your tips and the invoices for DonoLink fees, and Stripe shows your payouts. That gives you, or your accountant, a clean starting point.
VAT and bigger channels
If your streaming grows into a sizeable business, VAT registration and other obligations can come into play. Thresholds change, so check GOV.UK or ask an accountant once your income grows.
Frequently asked questions
Are Twitch donations taxable in the UK?
Usually, yes, as trading income once your streaming is more than a one-off. The first £1,000 of gross trading income in a tax year is covered by the trading allowance. Check GOV.UK for your own situation.
Do I need to register for Self Assessment?
Generally, if your gross trading income goes above £1,000 in a tax year, you need to register and file a return. HMRC's guidance on GOV.UK explains how.
When are the Self Assessment deadlines?
Register by 5 October after the tax year ends on 5 April. File your online return and pay what you owe by 31 January.
Can my viewers claim Gift Aid on a tip?
No. A tip is a voluntary payment to a creator, not a donation to a charity, so Gift Aid does not apply.
Does DonoLink provide documents?
Yes. Every tip is listed with its fees and net amount, and invoices for DonoLink fees are in the Transactions tab.
